To expose the cracks, the gaps, the breaches in existence and in daily life through literature: this is what Gisela Pankow set out to do, and succeeded, in her last book. Contemporary literature is a rich source of description and comprehension of the forces which violate psychic integrity.

In a previous book, “Man and his living space” (1986) Gisela Pankow explained:
“My work doesn't concern the metabolism of the possessing (having) in literature; I'd rather take the poets' speech at its face value in order to refer it to a status of existence”.

This psychoanalyst reveals through the characters, as she did in her clinical practice, the faults in the family structure and in the body image of the suffering person.

and a bibliography organised by Gisela Pankow finalize this work.

Gisela Pankow, a foremost figure in psychoanalysis, dedicated her life to the development of a therapeutic approach of psychosis
and similar psychic disorganisations.

For the first time translated into French, these writings bring together the most typical case examples.

The fundamental concepts, such as: body-image, transfer-graft, structuring-phantasm...
as well as the use of modelling during treatment are strongly justified.

Gisela Pankow (1914-1998), originally from Germany, moved to Paris in the 1950s. An internationally renowned psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, she trained several generations of analysts in France and abroad.

Mrs G. Pankow was a psychoanalyst in Paris and was Chair at Bonn's Medicine Faculty.
Medical doctor in Neuro-Psychiatry at Tübingen Faculty of Medicine and former assistant of Professor E. Kretschmer.

Ph. D. from Paris University, she published over 50 articles in the field of morpho-endocrinology
with Professor J. Decourt, as well as on psychiatry and on psychoanalysis.

She was also guest professor in the USA, Australia, Canada and Tunisia,
and gave conferences in most European countries.
From 1958 she supervised a Seminar in Paris entitled “The analytical therapy of psychosis”.

Mrs Gisela Pankow, a graduate in Neuro-Psychiatry from Tübingen Faculty of Medicine and former assistant of Professor E. Kretschmer, was one of the first German medical doctors authorised to work at a University department, after World War II, in Paris.

She is to be credited for building a bridge between German and French medical science, firstly with regards to the fields of Anthropology and Endocrinology, later and more importantly, in Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis.

The international level of Gisela Pankow's writings – six books and eighty scientific publications – highlight the quality of the training she held as of 1971 at the University of Paris VI – Medicine Faculty of Saint Antoine.
Between 1960 and 1970 she was Chair at Bonn's Medicine Faculty. She was also guest professor in the USA, Australia, Canada and Tunisia, and gave conferences in most European countries.
From 1958 she supervised a Seminar in Paris entitled “The analytical therapy of psychosis”.

As in her book “Man and his Psychosis”, the analytical technique shown here represents a broadening of the classic psychoanalytical scope. In psychosis, we would rather have access to what is psychically “non-represented”, the interpretation of repressed content being of lesser importance. This is why Gisela Pankow approaches the “non-represented” content through space-structure dialectic. This dialectic embodies the “non-represented” content giving it a tangible form.
Whereas object-relations and libido-processing are fundamental to understanding neurosis, in the analytical treatment of psychosis, the main axis lies in the security principle.

unveil its existential and symbolising truth”
Such is the issue of this writing, which regroups the analysis done by Dr Gisela Pankow of poetic speech for over thirty years, giving it a very specific direction. Kafka, Kurosawa, Garcia Marquez, Ernesto Sabato, Elsa Morante or Flaubert, as many other authors, reveal the variety of worlds whereby narcissism, the search for love and identity revelation may help us understand the depth of life, the cracks within us and in our own living body.

Gisela Pankow's writings are internationally known (nine books, one-hundred-and-twenty-five publications in eight different languages) and bear witness to the quality of the training she held between 1971 and 1992 at the University of Paris VI – Medicine Faculty of Saint Antoine.

This work traces back Dr Gisela Pankow's research on psychosis launched in 1956 and presents for the first time her theory of dynamic structuring in schizophrenia.
Gisela Pankow starts with a revised and extended version of the 1956 work. She continues by presenting the viewpoints construed over the years; she further clarifies and broadens the scope of her thinking on the one main issue: relations between rejection and identity. In a less systematic perspective, the author considers the interest of drawing the reader's attention to the North American theoretical state-of-the-art on schizophrenia at the end of the 1950s.

At a time when American psychiatrists' and psychoanalysts' writings were mainly unknown in France, IGisela Pankow actually had the brilliant idea of getting in touch with the foremost representatives of these disciplines,: Rosen, Grotjahn, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, Bateson, Flanders Dunbar, etc. to name but a few. In addition to this state-of-the-art, the author believed it relevant to enclose an interview from 1978 in which the reader can appreciate her recent theoretical developments.

In order to lighten up after “the descent into hell”, we have included short stories on real and on fake schizophrenia in everyday life.

His work is the result of the seminar “Analytical Psychotherapy of Psychosis”
which Dr Gisela Pankow supervised in Paris as of 1958.

Most of these papers were presented at this seminar, two of them were dissertations on psychiatry.
In this group emphasis was on developing partnerships with doctors working in the public sector.
This is why the cases presented are mostly from psychiatric hospital in-patient departments and out-patient public facilities.

The contributions here are vast in their style and nature.
Gisela Pankow was always attentive to the different therapeutic styles of each supervisee.

She aimed at avoiding any alienation that might restrain either the research perspective or the analytical therapy.
Nonetheless, the works presented in this collection have a common purpose:
to seek and to apply the technique of analytical therapy to psychosis.
